Suimplify Complex Fraction Without Variables Calculator

Reviewed by Calculator Editorial Team

This calculator helps you simplify complex fractions without variables. A complex fraction is a fraction where the numerator or denominator is also a fraction. Simplifying them involves eliminating the fractions in the numerator and denominator.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter the numerator and denominator values in the input fields. The calculator will automatically simplify the complex fraction and display the result in its simplest form.

Note: This calculator works with whole numbers only. For fractions with variables, please use our Variable Fraction Simplifier.

What Is a Complex Fraction?

A complex fraction is a fraction where either the numerator, the denominator, or both are also fractions. For example:

3/4 / 5/6

This is different from a mixed number, which has a whole number and a fraction combined.

The Simplification Process

To simplify a complex fraction, follow these steps:

  1. Find the Least Common Denominator (LCD) of all the fractions involved.
  2. Multiply both the numerator and denominator by the LCD.
  3. Simplify the resulting fraction by dividing both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD).

Simplified Fraction = (Numerator × LCD) / (Denominator × LCD)

Worked Examples

Example 1

Simplify 3/4 / 5/6:

  1. Find the LCD of 4 and 6, which is 12.
  2. Multiply numerator and denominator by 12: (3/4 × 12/12) / (5/6 × 12/12) = 36/48 / 60/72
  3. Simplify: 36/48 = 3/4 and 60/72 = 5/6
  4. Now simplify 3/4 / 5/6: Multiply numerator by 6 and denominator by 4 → 18/20 = 9/10

Result

9/10

Example 2

Simplify 2/3 / 4/5:

  1. Find the LCD of 3 and 5, which is 15.
  2. Multiply numerator and denominator by 15: (2/3 × 15/15) / (4/5 × 15/15) = 30/45 / 60/75
  3. Simplify: 30/45 = 2/3 and 60/75 = 4/5
  4. Now simplify 2/3 / 4/5: Multiply numerator by 5 and denominator by 3 → 10/12 = 5/6

Result

5/6

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a complex fraction and a mixed number?

A complex fraction has fractions in the numerator and/or denominator, while a mixed number combines a whole number with a fraction.

Can this calculator handle negative numbers?

Yes, the calculator can handle negative numbers in the numerator and denominator.

What if the numerator or denominator is zero?

The calculator will display an error message since division by zero is undefined.
